How Much Should You Spend On Photography For A Wedding?

How Much Should You Spend On Photography For A Wedding?

There is a laundry list of expenses associated with getting married: Flowers, food, alcohol, music, etc. One thing that can sometimes get overlooked in the wedding budget is photography. When deciding on photos for the wedding, it may be tempting to use an amature to save some money, but that isn’t always the best idea. When thinking about wedding photography there is a difference between wondering how much a wedding photographer costs, and wondering how much you, personally, should spend on wedding photography. The answer to this is as individual as the weddings themselves and depends heavily on several factors. Here is a breakdown of things to consider when deciding how much you should spend on wedding photography.

How Important Are Wedding Photos?

One of the biggest things you need to assess is how important wedding photos are for you and your significant other. Keep in mind that this may be one of the most important events of your adult life, and you will want to remember it forever. Not only that, but you will want something to show future generations. It isn’t just about the event, but the memories of love and joy for that moment. This is particularly important if you are able to have parents and grandparents at your wedding. They may not be around when you have your own children and it is nice to have a piece of your loved ones that have passed. These tangible memories are something you should take into consideration when deciding on a budget for your wedding photos.

How Big Is The Wedding?

Odds are, that if you are looking at wedding photography then you already know approximately how big of a wedding to expect. The size of the wedding is a big factor in deciding how much to invest in photography. If you are having a smaller, more intimate wedding, then one photographer is perfect. However, once you start getting over 150 guests, you will need more than one photographer to cover it all. However, even smaller weddings can warrant more than one photographer if it is a larger venue, or an outdoor wedding with a lot of space. Having two photographers can help capture moments happening in different locations at the same time. It also increases the chances of getting different angles, and pose ideas and benefiting from the experience of them individually, and as a pair if they have worked together before and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

What Is Your Wedding Photography Budget?

Magazines, and some wedding professionals, say that wedding photography should take about 15% of your wedding budget. This can, and honestly should, be used as a loose guideline of what to spend on wedding photos. This is because there are too many variables included in what you need for your specific wedding for that to be a hard and fast rule. However, say, 10% can be a more reasonable jumping off point. If possible, factor in a minimum of 10% or so based on your must-haves for photography then adjust accordingly. For instance, if your 20% flower budget comes in under, then you can roll that extra money into the photography budget in order to afford a couple of the extras that you want.

What Extras Do You Want?

Part of the cost of wedding photography are the extras. But what extras do you feel like you need, and what is not necessary to you?

A standard generic wedding photography package will usually include something like the following:

  • 8-12 hour photo session.
  • Family, bridal party, and wedding posed portraits.
  • Coverage of the ceremony and reception.
  • Gift exchange
  • Cake cutting
  • Etc

These are the normal offerings, but some photographers offer extras that may cost extra but can really make a difference in the experience of your wedding.

For example, Erie Wedding & Event Services offers a variety of other package options such as:

  • Engagement Photos: Proposal pictures are a fun way to announce your engagement, and it offers an opportunity to meet your photographer for the wedding and work out any kinks. This also gives them a chance to get to know your likes and dislikes in a way that can make the wedding day run much smoother.
  • Wedding drone photography and videography: Drone photography and videography is a spectacular new perspective that can really add to the experience of wedding photos, such as in an album.
  • Photo booth rentals: Photo booths are such fun. They capture the best parts of people and are small keepsakes for such a big night for you, and all of your guests.
  • Wedding Videography: Wedding videography has evolved since the days of Uncle Larry telling a terrible joke for you to see in a decade. Now, it is elegant and shows every important moment as it happens. Plus it can be downloaded and shared with family and friends.
  • Couples Photos: These are not necessarily part of the wedding photography budget, but they are a great thing for Newly Wed couples to do to capture the continuation of their love story. It can be done right after the wedding or on the anniversary of the wedding day.

Erie Photography: Professional and Stress-free!

If the idea of figuring out what you should pay for wedding photography is stressing you out, the best thing you can do is take a step back. Breathe. Then call a couple of local wedding photographers in the area to help you get an idea of pricing and what they offer because no one knows more about photography than a professional photographer. However, you should always keep in mind that price is not always a direct reflection of quality, and that you should look at sample photos, and ask plenty of questions about their style before deciding on a photographer.

Capture the memories of your big day by choosing Erie Photography. We provide professional affordable photography packages for all those big days leading up to (and ON) your big day. Check out some of our work here.

There are beautiful sandy beaches, amazing state parks, and breathtaking views everywhere you look. It’s no surprise that Lake Erie is a popular destination for weddings. In fact there are approximately 180 possible wedding venues in Erie, PA. So, can you get married on Lake Erie? Yes, in many places. August Wedding at Whispering Trees Manor

August Wedding at Whispering Trees Manor

Large Joyful Summer Wedding

Tyler & Kelsey’s ‘Can Do’ spirit was very present on their wedding day. Despite the frustration and limitations of 2020, this couple did not let hiccups get in the way. The couple chose an outdoor wedding location in Edinboro, Pa. This Wedding at Whispering Trees Manor was undaunted by the disappointments many were facing. Our Photography team worked alongside the couples Wedding Planner, Eve Frank from our own Erie Wedding & Event Services to capture the love story and details. A large bridal party consisting of 11 of their closest family & friends and a lively guest count of 175 made the day exciting and energetic!

Finally Saying Their Vows

Kelsey told us a little bit about their love story and what it took to get to where they are. Tyler & Kelsey had been together for 7 years before getting married and both of them joked about FINALLY tying the knot. The light-hearted joking was one of the highlights of their wedding day. One of the most important things to Kelsey was honoring her parent’s by recreating a photo taken on her parents wedding day. Our team made sure to capture that image.

What We Did

For this Wedding at Whispering Trees Manor we worked closely with Erie Wedding & Event Services Planner, Eve Frank to form a pose list and follow the timeline for the day. We began by capturing Getting Ready photos with the Bride & her girls who got ready in the upstairs suite in the farm house. The guys got ready downstairs. We took advantage of how quickly the groom and groomsmen got ready and got some fun posed shots on the other side of the property. Once Kelsey was fully dressed we did a quick first look with her dad in the apple orchard on the property. There were no dry eyes.

The love filled ceremony went off without a hitch. A close family friend officiated the wedding. Kelsey’s proud dad walked her down the aisle and the adorable flower girl tried to steal the show at the back of the ceremony.

While our team captured the couples formal photos a lively cocktail hour began under the covered pavilion decorated to the hilt with rich cranberry red. Our team stayed to document the Grand Entrance, sweet cake cutting, hilarious toasts and speeches and finally the romantic first dance. The day was chocked full of excitement and we loved every moment of this wedding at Whispering Trees Manor.

That’s Not the End

While Kelsey & Tyler’s wedding day wrapped up nicely, we weren’t done yet. Because the couple didn’t need Engagement Photos, they opted instead for our unique Newlywed Session. About a week after their wedding day we met up on private property at sunset to capture some intimate photos of the two of them alone. This special time allows our couples to focus on each other away from the hustle and bustle of their wedding day. We had an amazing time meeting up with Tyler & Kelsey to finish off their Wedding Collection with these rare images.

Fall Wedding at Pymatuning Reservoir

Fall Wedding at Pymatuning Reservoir

No Fuss Fall Wedding

Trevor & Ashley are what you call a ‘No Fuss’ couple. They are laid back and really appreciate the little things in life. Being outdoor enthusiasts holding their wedding at Pymatuning Reservoir was a no-brainer. The couple has sentimental ties to the area.

An Easy Going Wedding Plan

When Ashely first contacted us she made it clear that her & Trevor were down to earth people. They love nature, anything outdoors, each other, and their children. They decided to host their wedding at Pymatuning Reservoir because the family participates in so many recreational activities in the area. Saying their vows in a location that means so much to their family made sense.

Captured Moments

Because Trevor & Ashley were hosting such a laid back wedding day they opted for our Sweetheart Collection which is perfect for small weddings. Our team began with the ceremony, captured formal photos, and stayed through for cake cutting. Ashley & Trevor hosted a very informal reception nearby at a picnic pavilion. Ashley chose navy and sunflower yellow for their wedding colors. She carried a sunflower bouquet and their 2-tiered wedding cake was decked out with sunflowers and a navy ribbon.

Surrounded by Love

Although, 2020 proved to be a challenging year for couples, Trevor & Ashley were still able to hold their dream wedding at Pymatuning Reservoir. We were honored to capture this chapter in their love story. We wish the newlyweds and their children much happiness and lots of outdoor adventure!

Sunflower Wedding at Riverside Golf Club

Sunflower Wedding at Riverside Golf Club

Sunflower Wedding at Riverside Golf Club

Like many other couples in 2020, Tyler & Kendra were left facing some tough decisions. While many couples decided to postpone their weddings, many chose to ‘split the difference’. Tyler & Kendra were one of our couples who held a smaller Wedding at Riverside Golf Club with a larger festive reception the following year. Kendra chose sunflowers for her bouquet and cake decor. Little sunflower cupcakes were adorable. Because the marriage was blending two families, their children participated in the wedding. Kendra’s two daughers wore navy blue. Tyler’s little girl was too cute.

The Details

Tyler & Kendra knew they’d have to scale back on their wedding at Riverside Golf Club. But they were so in love they were willing to make the sacrafice to get married when they orginally planned. Although, the couple had reserved our team Erie DJ Entertainment as well as the Photography, it was soon realized that they would not be able to use the DJ service for the small event. We were flexible with them and rewrote their contract allowing them to redeem a larger photo amount than originally agreed upon so they wouldn’t lose their deposit.

The team captured some getting ready, ceremony, formal photos and stayed long enough for cake cutting and first dances.

Family Moments

Everything about Tyler & Kendra’s Wedding at Riverside Golf Club was centered around family. You could see the tenderness between the couple, their kids and their parents. Set up inside the ceremony room was a table dedicated to family who were with them in spirit.

Undaunted by Challenges

Indeed, 2020 and all it’s restrictions proved challenging for people everywhere. It was refreshing, however, to see a couple who’s love was strong enough to carry them through these difficulties. We’re thankful and inspired by Tyler & Kendra’s resolve to hold a Covid Wedding during these trials. Thank you for remaining undaunted by the challenges and sharing those beautiful, intimate moments with our team. Congratulations. We know that you will successfully overcome many challenges together with strenght and resolve.

Winter Engagement Photos Guide

Winter Engagement Photos Guide

The Winter Engagement Photos

When most people think of engagement photos, they think of sunny days with bright colors, fields of flowers, and happy couples beaming with joy. While those photos can still be taken during the winter months, the colder weather offers its own unique set of possibilities. If you’re planning to take your engagement photos during the winter, here are a few tips to help make the most of it.

winter engagement photos

Where to Take Winter Engagement Photos

When you think about winter engagement photos, what comes to mind? Maybe visions of a cozy cabin nestled in a snowy forest, or a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through a wintry wonderland. If you’re looking to take your winter engagement photos to the next level, consider one of these ideas!

The very first place that comes to my mind for winter engagement photos is Peek’n Peak Resort. This is an obvious choice because it’s a popular ski lodge with lots of fun winter activities to check out. We’ve found the snow covered (and unused) golf course is a fantastic place to take some snuggled up photos.

Another great option is your Wedding Venue! You heard me right. We met up with one couple during a blizzard in February on the grounds of their venue, Mound Grove, to capture winter engagement photos for their fall wedding. Side note: Get permission from the venue for this.

If you need a little more inspiration you can check out our blog on Where to Take Engagement Photos.

Props & Activities for Winter Engagement Photos

As we mentioned Peek’n Peak before you may already know where we’re heading with this. Planning ahead with your photographer, get to some winter activities! If you’re a skier, get on some skis and head down the slopes together. It’s a winter engagement photos session…no wait…it’s a fun date! If you’re not much of a skier you could build a snow man, make snow angels, or head inside for a cup of piping hot cocoa. Maybe warm up in front of a blazing fire for some romantic photos for your collection.

One of our favorite winter engagement photo sessions was for one of our own photographers. We met at Peek’n Peak while it was decorated for Christmas and he serenaded her on the piano. Afterwards, we took a walk across the golf course near the pond. It was a very fun day.

winter engagement photos

Winter Engagement Picture Outfits.

It really should go without saying that if you’re taking photos in Erie…in the winter…that you know better to dress warm. A winter coat, a cute hat, mittens, and a scarf are appropriate. We just did a winter wedding out in the snow and while the bride took her coat off for the photos she was smartly wearing big winter boots under her gown. No one could tell because the snow hid them.

For ladies make sure your makeup is crisp and clean and choose a hairstyle that won’t get ruinied by a hat or the snow. You may want to stay away from white or neutrals if you’re taking outdoor photos so you don’t blend into the snow. I mean, unless you want to pretend you’re an arctic bunny.

Gentleman, keep the same things in mind. Choose to style your hair in a way that you won’t be upset by hats or snow and stay away from whites and light nuetral colors. This is the perfect time of year to break out those rich, vivid colors!

If you’re not sure what to wear or you need a little more inspiration you can always check out our blog What to Wear for Engagement Photos.

Use the Warmth of Golden Hour

Images are given a glow when taken during the golden hour, the hour just before sunset. It also instantly warms up the colors reflected on the snow. It’s hard to take warm photos in the winter scenery because everything is crisp and white with blue skies, but that brief time of day when the suns golden rays bounce across the landscape are just so magical.

If you need inspiration for your winter engagement photos you can check out some of our favorites on our Erie Photography Pinterest account. And while you’re at it…follow us. We share other fun tips for your photo sessions. Get inspired!

Sum It Up

In conclusion, taking engagement photos during the winter can be a fun and unique experience. By following these tips, you can make sure that your photos turn out great. So get outside and enjoy the snow while capturing some beautiful memories!
