What to Wear For Senior Guys Pictures

Hey guys! Are you wondering what to wear for Senior Guys Pictures? You didn’t think this was just fun for the ladies did you? Get ready to bring out your inner 9 year old for just a minute and post a sign on the board that reads “No Girls Allowed”. They’ve got their own blog. They don’t need yours. First off, I know you guys aren’t usually thrilled about getting your picture taken. I have 4 boys of my own. Getting any of them to sit still in front of a camera is a feat I feel I deserve an award for. Do they make a parenting award like that? Let’s get real. Senior guys are usually only doing a session because mom said so, grandma guilted and/or your girlfriend begged. We get it. You’re way too busy and to cool to play dress up and smile. But we don’t want this session to feel like a chore for you. We’re about to capture who you are and tell your amazing story. You want people to know your cool story, right? The first place to make this more fun for you is……outfit advice? Yeah, trust me. It is. Having someone help make it easier on what to wear helps out a lot. So, you can focus on just being you.

We like to use Planning Guides that help you understand what to expect at our shoot and give you ideas about why it’s important for you to pick the setting. First, you choose the Best Location to Take Your Senior Photos. Next, you’ll fill out our questionnaire to help us get to know you. Finally, we use what we call a Mood Board that gives us a visual idea of what you want us to capture.

Senior Outfit Tips For Guys

1. Mom’s (Grandma’s) Outfit- The first outfit is usually what mom picks out. Trust me, she’ll have an opinion. If you’re mom is anything like me this is where she’ll remind you of the long nights pacing the floor with you and how she brought you into this world. Typically, us moms pick out a super clean cut outfit on the dressier side. We like to show you off all dapper. Button up shirt, khakis or slacks, and loafers or dress shoes make us moms happy. Want to score real points for being the best son ever? Throw in a fancy fedora or a tie (they sell zipper ones now). The more successful and handsome you look the more we can clutch our chest and say: Oh mommy’s heart and soul!! 

2. The ‘YOU’ Outfit- The second outfit is all about you. What do you feel really comfortable in? Do you kick it in jeans and a t-shirt? Are khakis and polo shirts your go-to? If you’re sporty maybe your jersey or team jacket would be nice. The ‘YOU’ outfit is going to be the one you look back on and smile. It’s the one you give out to friends because it’s how they’ll remember you. Best of all, it’s the one you already own. No boring shopping trip to pick out new clothes. 

3. Match the Location- Remember I mentioned earlier how we want you to Pick the Location of your Shoot? (That’s a link to our blog about cool locations around Erie County.) Well, it just makes sense to have your outfit match the location. Are you really going to wear a tuxedo on the beach? Would those Nike Sandals and basket ball shorts look the best in front of marble pillars at the court house? Think about where you’re taking your photos so you don’t stick out like a sore thumb. 

4. Think About the Season- I’ve got this group of Seniors I shot last year who are all Skiers. They belong to the Ski Club and they work at the Ski Lodge near us. They were all talking about getting their Senior Pictures during the winter on the slopes. It makes sense for them to wear warm sweaters, ski jackets, and long sleeve shirts. Can you imagine a Hawaiian Luau Shirt on the slopes? Matching what to wear for Senior Guys Pictures with both location AND season makes sense. 

5. Don’t Be Afraid of Props- This is where all the Senior Guys I’ve shot have excelled. They love adding something personal and fun into their portrait session. One added a football with his Class year on it because….you guessed it…he played football. Another loved his expensive sunglasses so he brought those along. Add those little touches that make you…you. You’ll feel more comfortable and really capture who you are that way.

6. NO NEON- Guys. Let’s talk. The ’80’s were…….best left in the ’80’s. I still have PTSD from the leather and lace, white rain hair, neon spandex, and too much Madonna. Neon did NOT age well AND it looks terrible in photos. Neon is a photographers nightmare. Not too mention you’re dating yourself by wearing outfits that are trendy for only 10 minutes before they (thankfully) get shoved back into the bottom of your closet under the soccer cleats. Neon is….just don’t. Thanks.

7. ADIDAS…..Adios- Okay look. I know you paid a lot of part time fast food job money for those Nike pants and that Adidas logo hoodie. But come on. These pictures need to be classy and last forever. Photos in gear with huge logos and company names printed across them just aren’t invitation or newsprint material. And they are super distracting. I strongly suggest you make your Champion Sports statement during school and not during your Senior Photo Session. I had one guy do this once. His photos in that sweatshirt aren’t anywhere near as nice and his mother didn’t order any of them. 

8. Use Your Interests- If you’re in sports, bring that uniform. If you were in marching band bring your instrument. Hey, if you love to drive around in your JEEP on the weekends wash it up and grab some pics with your JEEP. It’s important that you reflect YOU.

10 Tips on What To Wear For Senior Girls Pictures

Deciding what to wear for Senior Girls Pictures is easy and fun with these fantastic tips!

Hey Ladies!! Getting ready to graduate already? Class of 2022 is in the house! It’s almost the end of your Junior Year AND it’s time to start thinking about your Senior Pictures! Before you know it, you’ll be a Senior! You know what that means?

Senior year is busy! You’ve got school activites, sports, band, choir, community projects, homework (soooooo much homework), college and scholarship applications, AND deciding what you want to do with the rest of your life. (yeah, like that doesn’t bring on a panic attack) BUT, there are some fun perks like Senior Prom, Awards Banquets, extra privileges (like cutting in line at lunch on pizza day) AND Senior Portraits!

Gurl, now is your time to shine, and your Senior Photos are going to help you do just that. Your Senior Photos are going to tell the story of who you are and how you got here (lots of hard work, I bet). Figuring out what to wear for Senior Girls pictures can seem a little overwhelming. But, we’ve got 10 pretty awesome tips to make sure you look your best while capturing who you are.

What to Wear For Senior Pictures

1. Check Your Closet First- We all have that killer outfit that makes us look and feel like we can take on the world. Shopping is fun, but if you already own that Girl Power outfit there’s no need to shop. (I mean, you don’t need an excuse to shop, do you?) Bonus is that you know this outfit. It’s like a good friend. You’re comfortable in it and you know there won’t be any weird wardrobe malfunctions. Remember while going through your closet that solid colors photograph better than prints and that neutral color pallets are classy and stand the test of time. I wore a taupe linen shirt at mine 25 years ago and it still looks like it’s in fashion. 

2. Choose Two to Three Outfits- Picking more than one outfit to wear during your session means you have more looks to go with. Make sure to get your outfits ready ahead of time. Wash, dry, remove wrinkles and check for pet hair or lint a day or two before your senior photos. Gather together all of the accesories you want to use as well and pack it neatly together in a way that won’t cause more wrinkles. Pack a lint roller just in case if you’re wearing dark colors.

3. Did We Mention Accesories?- Accessories can make your Senior Portraits POP!! Throw in anything you would normally wear and add to it a bit for some sparkle! Jewelry, Hats, Scarves, Sunglasses, and cute shoes. REALLY CUTE SHOES. In fact, bring more than one pair of shoes for each outfit just in case. It doesn’t take much time to slip on heels when you were wearing flats. And, man I can’t say enough for a chic hat. Floppy, woven, flowers, ball cap, hats are so awesome.

4. Dress It Up Girl- While jeans and a cute top might be your everyday outfit and you feel great in it, remember your parents and grandparents want to show you off. Maybe you want to show you off as well. That being said, bring a dressier outfit with you! For instance, a cute sun dress is pretty enough for grandma and twirling around in it will make your eyes sparkle with fun! Maxi skirts can make you look and feel elegant. Bring out the flair girl!

5. What About Those Shoes Again?- Shoes……instantly I get excited. Heels, pumps, ballet flats, and my favorite kicks, my Chuck’s. I will wear those purple Chucks with anything and everything. While your shoes may be super cute, they may NOT be super comfortable. You’ll be walking a lot so bring an extra pair of easy to slip on shoes that pamper your feet while you’re walking from one spot to the next. Oh yeah…if you pick sandals or open toe shoes….remember to pamper your toes so they look picture perfect too.

6. Let’s Talk About Props- Okay, so props isn’t exactly a “what to wear for senior girls pictures” item. Or is it? Bringing props to your portrait session means you get to tell more of your story. Play volleyball? Bring your ball and wear your uniform in a few photos. Like to read? Bring your favorite book. If you were a cheerleader bring your pom-poms and cheer outfit. You get the picture…get it? Picture….I’m not even a dad and I have dad jokes….

7. BACK To Accesories- You may have guessed that I’m a little obsessed about accesories. But that’s only because there’s SO MUCH you can do with them. But seriously, if you’re accesorizing, pick stuff that means something really special to you. For my senior pictures I wore a pearl and Austrian crystal necklace my grandma had given me the Christmas prior. You see, she passed away that next February and wearing that necklace meant I had a piece of her with me. Now, excuse me while I grab a tissue. 

8. What Season Are We In?– Because your Photos can be taken in any season your outfits should reflect that. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to wear pastels in the fall while you’re munching on an apple and laying in orange and red leaves. And (my north eastern pals), can you imagine trying to wear a sundress in the middle of January. I don’t reccomend it, unless you’re hoping for blue skin in your photos. 9. Think About What You’re Wearing….Under There- If there is the slightest chance your bra strap will show, you need to make arrangements to avoid that. A sturdy strapless bra or a neutral colored tank top if you’re wearing a colored bra under a light colored shirt is smart. What about your underwear? If flashing grandma isn’t on your list of things to do, maybe pick an outfit that doesn’t show off too much is best. Try sitting down in your outfit in front of a mirror at home before settling on it. From experience, we’ve lost a lot of great shots because it was too risky to take sitting down photos when the senior was wearing an outfit that was too short. This is the time to show off your personality, not your undergarments.

10. Go With Classy, Not Trendy- Let’s go back to that ‘revealing’ outfit. I’ve noriced this year that super short rompers and crop tops are in style. Guess what? They won’t be in style 10 years from now and you’re going to be stuck with photos making you wonder what you were thinking. Classics like denim, white tailored shirts, sundresses, and khakis will stand the test of time. Consider this for your hair style too. You don’t want to look back at your Senior Pictures in horror like many of us who survived the ’80’s hair band era do. Way too much White Rain back then. My eyes are still burning.

Well ladies, that’s all she wrote. Now you should have a good idea on what to wear for senior girls pictures. No guess work, just great ideas. Here’s one last bonus tip though: If you’re planning on most of your shoots being outside, wear something underneath your outfits that make changing on the fly easy. A tank top and a pair of boy shorts will make it super easy to change between outfits without having to find a restroom. And bring a friend with you for fun. Not only will it make you more comfortable to have that emotional support, a good friend doesn’t mind carrying all your extra outfits. (wink wink)

Are you wondering what to wear for senior pictures? After all, these photos are a HUGE deal in your life. You want to look and feel your best so that your unique and amazing personality shines through. Figuring out what to wear for both Senior Girls and Senior Guys can be hard. What NOT to Wear For Senior Pictures?

I know we’ve talked a lot about what you SHOULD wear for senior pictures. But I’d like to close with a few tips on what NOT to wear. Don’t buy a brand new outfit and wait until the day of your shoot to try it out. That’s where terrible wardrobe malfunctions happen and you leave feeling embarassed. Don’t wear too much white. It’s hard to photograph and the colors don’t show well. Also, don’t wear neon colors. Those don’t photograph well and don’t stay true to color in photos. In addition, if you don’t love it, don’t wear it. Let me repeat. If you don’t love it, don’t wear it. I promise you, the pictures will show what outfits you loved and which ones you could have left at home. 

When Should You Take Senior Photos?

You should take your senior pictures when you are ready. I know, that sounds super simple, right? If you love fall weather and fall clothes….do your session in the fall. If you love winter and being bundled up, go for it in winter! Spring is a great time weatherwise and outdoors as well. One thing you’ll need to consider is your own personal timeline for senior pictures. Are there due dates for senior slideshow submission? Do you have to get Graduation Announcements or invitations out? Consider those deadlines and work backwards with your photographer and their turnaround time on getting your photos back to you. Remember time to create, or for your photographer to design, your stationary items and have them printed as well. Starting as early as the spring of your Junior year isn’t a bad idea.
